  The City of DeKalb

Park 88 is located in the northern Illinois city of DeKalb (pop. 39,521), the largest community in DeKalb County (82,703). DeKalb County is included in the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area with its eastern border approximately 50 miles from Lake Michigan; its western border 60 miles from Iowa and its northern border 25 miles from Wisconsin.

The second largest town in the county, Sycamore (county seat), is located six miles north of Park 88 and has an approximate population of 10,000. DeKalb and Sycamore are the county’s center for population, commerce, industry, and retail.

Northern Illinois University (approx. enrollment 21,000) is located in the city of DeKalb and is nationally recognized for its excellence in higher education.  Kishwaukee Community College is located in Malta, approximately six miles west of DeKalb.

Shabbona Lake State Park is located in the southern portion of the county and is regarded as one of the top fishing lakes in Illinois.  There are many beautiful forest and prairie preserves within the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District.  The DeKalb and Sycamore Park districts operate several public golf courses and a variety of gorgeous community parks.  The Kishwaukee Family YMCA offers a wide array of family and youth activities.  Music and arts are important to the community, as is history, and the area's museums, art centers and theaters provide excellent opportunities to enjoy the cultural arts.  NIU is the home of the nationally renowned NIU Jazz Band and the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

There are many firsts in DeKalb County.  The DeKalb County Farm Bureau is the oldest and largest Farm Bureau in the nation.  The Sandwich Fair (DeKalb County Fair) is the oldest continuous county fair in the country.  The DeKalb Municipal Band is the oldest continuous band in the nation.

Shopping is never a problem in DeKalb County.  Route 23, known as DeKalb Avenue in Sycamore and Sycamore Road in DeKalb, is the core of retail shopping in the area.  Downtown DeKalb is part of the Illinois Main Street Program and downtown Sycamore is bustling with shops and merchants.
